BLOOPERS Social Service ReportsA social service agency in a large eastern city has kept a record of various reports received. Here are a few of the more interesting requests from persons applying for help:
1. I cannot get sick pay. I have 6 children. Can you tell me why this is? 2. Unless I get my money soon I will be forced to lead an immortal life. 3. I am glad to report that my husband, who was reporting missing is now dead. 4. Sirs: I am forwarding my marriage certificate and two children, one of which is a mistake, as you can see. 5. I am very much annoyed to find that you have branded my oldest boy illiterate. Oh, it is a dirty lie. I married his father a week before he was born. 6. Please send me money at nce as I need it badly. I have fallen into error with my landlady. 7. In answer to your letter I have given birth to a boy weighing ten pounds. I hope this is satisfactory. 8. You have changed my little boy to a little girl. Will it make any difference? 9. I have no children yet. My husband is a bus driver and he works day and night. 10. In accordance with your instructions, I have given birth to twins in the enclosed envelope. 11. I want my money as quickly as you can send it. I have been in bed with a doctor for two weeks and he doesn't seem to be doing me much good. If things don't improve I will have to send for another doctor. National Reference Library, 1952
