POEMS

With Dad

Quite a long time ago I remember,
    Although just a towheaded lad,
That no matter where father was going
    I tagged right along with Dad.

I was never too busy with playthings
    Or games with the girls and boys,
For when I’d see Dad starting somewhere,
    I’d forsake my companions and toys.

When I’d bounce out of bed in the morning
    And notice that maybe I had
Slept too late, I would do without breakfast
    Before I’d miss going with Dad.

And then late at night, although sleepy
    And tired, it would make my heart glad,
If he’d go to town on some pretext,
    And I could go out with my Dad.

When it rained, and the street was a river,
    Then nothing could make me so sad
As the sight of him going without me;
    Oh, how lonely I felt without Dad.

Years have passed, and time brought its changes;
    With some of them good and some bad.
But there’s one thing that time never altered–
    My ambition to travel with Dad.

Once again, a dark storm brought a river,
    And left my heart vacant and sad.
For he went without me–but someday
    Again I’ll be walking with Dad.
