How Deep Are Your Roots?

While driving near Westminster, Maryland, my father showed me where a tornado had recently touched down. We noted how this wild storm had uprooted a dozen or more huge trees along a stream bed. We saw evidence that the tornado had gone up over a hill and into the next valley, as the treetops on the hill were slightly damaged--but none were uprooted. The trees atop the hill get less water and had to drive their roots deeper over the years, but for this reason they were stronger than those in the valley.
